Requirements
- For appointment to this grade, an applicant must have:-
- (i) A Bachelor of Laws degree from a recognized University or Institution;
- (ii) A Diploma from Kenya School of Law or exemption by the Council of Legal Education;
- (iii) Admission to the Roll of Advocates;
- (iv) Have at least thirteen (13) years’ post admission experience as a distinguished academic or legal practitioner or such experience in other relevant legal field
- (v) Demonstrated managerial and professional competence in work performance and results;
- (vi) Proficiency in computer application; and
- (vii) Have a high moral character, integrity and impartiality.

- (In addition to the above qualifications, the applicants must demonstrate a high degree of professional competence, communication skills, fairness, good temperament, making of good judgments in both legal and life experiences and commitment to public and community service.)
- Note: Post graduate qualification in relevant discipline will be an added advantage.
Duties and Responsibilities
- This is the highest grade in the Magistrates cadre. The duties and responsibilities at this level will include:-

- (i) Presiding over a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Kenya with jurisdiction as stipulated in various statutes;
- (ii) Performing the functions of a Deputy Registrar;
- (iii) Developing annual work plans for the station;
- (iv) Overseeing the operations of the court(s) and management of staff under his
-her charge;
- (v) Training, mentoring, coaching, counseling and guiding staff working under him
-her, and
- (vi) Any other duty as may be assigned from time to time.

-The positions have been declared for those not serving in the Judiciary.

- b) A detailed and updated curriculum vitae summarizing the applicant’s bio-data including, background information, (such as community service, financial discipline, pro bono activity, involvement as a party in litigation and involvement in political activity including any financial contribution to any political party

-professional engagement for the last five (5) years, three (3) professional referees and two (2) character references who can verify and comment on the applicant’s past and present employment.
- c) Five (5) samples of any writings by the applicant, including but not limited to judgments, advocacy submissions in courts, scholarly writings or any legal publications that the applicant has authored.
- d) The applicant’s three recent coloured passport size photographs.
- e) Declaration of income and liabilities as at the time of making the application, using the prescribed forms (The Declaration of Income, Assets and Liabilities Form JSC 2b). For those who are in Government employment, attach copies of returns of declaration of income and liabilities and for those in private practice attach income tax returns, for the last three (3) years.
- f) Certified copies of testimonials and professional certificates and academic transcripts.
- g) Certificate of good conduct, Higher Education Loans Board clearance certificate, Tax Compliance Certificate, EACC clearance, LSK clearance, and Advocates Complaints Commission clearance.

- Applicants are also required to forward one (1) hard copy of the completed Employment Application Form including all the attachments cited above. The Forms can also be downloaded from the Judiciary’s Website - www.judiciary.go.ke
- Successful applicants should be willing to serve in any magistrate court within the Republic of Kenya.
