Requirements
-For appointment to the position of the Chairperson of the Co-operative Tribunal, the candidate must possess the following qualifications:-
- (a) Bachelor of Laws degree from a recognized university;
- (b) Passed the prescribed examination of the Council of Legal Education, Kenya and awarded a Diploma or certificate thereby by the Kenya School of Law;
- (c) A certificate of Admission to the Roll of Advocates to practice as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
- (d) Held the qualifications in (a) to (c) above for at least five (5) years.
- (e) A member in good standing of the relevant professional body.
- (f) Provided that the Council may, in addition, require that a person to whom this
- (g) Be of high moral character, integrity and impartiality, in line with Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution.
- In addition to the above qualifications, the candidates must demonstrate a high decree of professional competence, administrative and management skills, communication skills, fairness, good temperament, making good judgment in both legal and life experiences and commitment to public and community life.
- Notes:-
- Experience may have been gained in Kenya or in any other country with a Common Law jurisdiction.
- Knowledge and experience in co-operative societies matters will be an added advantage.

Duties and Responsibilities
-The Chairperson of the Co-operative Tribunal shall be based in Nairobi and shall exercise the following functions:-
- (a) Preside over all the proceedings where she is present in person with unlimited geographical and pecuniary jurisdiction on matters of co-operative disputes;
- (b) Participate in hearing and determination of all disputes which come before the full bench;
- (c) Sit alone, hear and determine all applications for temporary injunctions as provided under section 80(4) of the Co-operative Societies Act;
- (d) Authorize, sign and issue summons to enter appearance in all matters instituted in the tribunal;
- (e) Enter judgments in default of appearance;
- (f) Determine and pronounce upon any point of law arising in the course of proceedings before the Tribunal, in respect to Section 80(3) of the Act;
- (g) Approve, sign, issue and certify orders, decrees and certificates of costs, copies of proceedings and warrants of attachments for execution of court decrees and orders;
- (h) Write and pronounce awards, judgments, orders, rulings and decrees issued by the Tribunal;
- (i) Appoint Assessors pursuant to Section 80 of the Act;
- (j) Advise the Minister for Co-operative Development and Marketing on establishment of benches of the Tribunal under Section 86 of the Act;
- (k) Conduct proceedings for contempt of Tribunal under Section 83 of the Act;
- (l) Organize and conduct circuits in al the sub registries around the country.
- (m) Hear appeals on surcharges given under Section 73 of the Act by the Commissioner for Co-operative Development;
- (n) Liaise with the Office of the Chief Justice on policies pertaining to administration of justice generally and the Co-operative law in particular;
- (o) Attend judicial conferences with the Tribunal Secretary on behalf of the Tribunal.
- (p) Articulate and publish Tribunal sittings calendar in the Kenya Gazette.

For those who are in Public Service employment, attach copies of the returns declaration of income and liabilities for the last three (3) financial years and those in private Sector attach income tax returns , for the last 3 financial years.
- e) Certified Copies of academic and professional certificates and testimonials
- f) Five (5) sample of any writings by applicant, including but not limited to judgments, advocacy submissions in court, scholarly writing s or any legal publications that the applicant has authored.
- g) Applicants MUST also submit copies of VALID Clearance certificates from the following bodies
- i. Higher Education Loans Board
- ii. Kenya Revenue authority
- iii. Ethics and Anti –Corruption Commission
- iv. Directorate of Criminal Investigation
- v. A recognized Credit Reference Bureau
- Applicants are also required to forward one (1) hard Copy of the Completed Employment Form JSC 2 (available on the Website www.judiciary.go.ke under other downloads) and attaching all the attachments cited above.
